Medicare Eligibility Requirements
For people over 65:
- Those who are eligible for Social Security or Railroad Retiment benefits.
- Those who may also be eligible for Medicare through their spouse’s or former spouse’s Social security benefits.
For people under 65:
- Those who have received Social Security Disability benefits for 2 years.
- Those who are eligible for Social Security Disability benefits and have Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) or end-stage rental disease (ESRD).
Medicare Advantage Plan Eligibility Requirements:
- You must have Part A and Part B of Medicare.
- You must live in the plan’s service area.
- You must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
Medicare Advantage Plan Eligibility Requirements for People with ESRD
If you have ESRD, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during the following periods:

- The open enrollment period, which runs from October 15 to December 7 for coverage starting on January 1.
- The initial enrollment period, which is the 7-month period that begins the month you turn 65 or become eligible for Medicare.
